Walk behind the waterfall!
If you are looking for a hike that feels rewarding without taking over your whole day, Grotto Falls is one of my favorite recommendations near Grey Haven. Tucked along the Roaring Fork area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this trail combines several things guests usually want in one outing: an easy-to-love waterfall, a forest setting that feels unmistakably Smoky Mountain, and a route that is memorable for families, couples, and first-time visitors alike.
What makes Grotto Falls stand out is simple: it is the only waterfall in the national park with a trail that passes behind the falling water. That alone makes it feel a little different from the average waterfall stop. Instead of just reaching an overlook, you get the experience of stepping into the cool, misty cove and walking behind the cascade itself. It a 2.6 mile round trip hike to the falls,
The hike begins from the Trillium Gap Trailhead in the Roaring Fork area and is about 2.6 miles roundtrip. For many visitors, that makes it a great middle-ground option. It is long enough to feel like a real outing, but short enough that you can still pair it with a scenic drive, lunch in Gatlinburg, or a relaxed evening back at Grey Haven.
Along the way, the trail winds through old-growth forest, crosses small streams, and passes thick rhododendron that make the walk especially pretty in spring and early summer. Even when the falls are the destination, the path itself is part of the appeal. This is the kind of trail where people tend to slow down, take photos, and enjoy the feeling of being tucked away in the woods.
A few practical notes help set expectations. The trail is popular, especially in warmer months, and parking at the trailhead is limited and requires a parking tag. There are authorized shuttle providers, so if you’re just going for the hike you might consider that option. I’ve never used the shuttles, so I can’t make a recommendation. If Grotto Falls is on your list, it is smart to start early and keep a backup plan in mind. After rain, the path can also be muddy or slippery in spots, so sturdy shoes are worth it.
For Grey Haven guests, Grotto Falls works especially well on a day when you want a scenic Smokies adventure without committing to an all-day, strenuous climb. It gives you a beautiful payoff, a true national park feel, and one of those classic mountain moments that tends to become a trip highlight.
If you are building a Roaring Fork day, this is an easy trail to put at the top of the list. Enjoy the forest and historic atmosphere of the area, and head out to the falls for a hike that feels both approachable and unforgettable.
