One of the best parts of a Smoky Mountain trip is how close you feel to nature — and yes, that includes the chance of seeing a bear.
In this area, it’s not unusual for bears to come through quietly. The key is simply being bear-smart: don’t attract them with smells, and don’t accidentally make your cabin area an easy snack stop.
Here are the low-stress basics that help keep your stay comfortable and help keep Gatlinburg’s bears safe too.
What “bear-smart” really means (and what it doesn’t)
Bear-smart doesn’t mean you need to be nervous or on edge. It means:
- Secure anything that smells like food
- Keep trash fully locked up
- Give wildlife plenty of space
Most bear problems around cabins start with trash or unclean grills, not with people doing anything wild.
The #1 rule: trash and food smells
If you remember only one thing, make it this:
Never leave trash bags outside the bear bin — even for a minute.
At Grey Haven, as you enter the driveway you’ll see the bear bin on your left. Trash pickup is typically Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
The bear bin has a lock that may take two hands to use. When you close it, make sure the locking/plunger mechanism is fully engaged so the sliding section can’t shift back open.
Grill and outdoor eating cleanup (important)
There’s an outdoor grill available for your use. If you grill or eat outside:
- Please clean the grill after use
- Don’t leave food scraps, greasy trays, or packaging outside overnight
- Do a quick “crumb check” before heading in
Don’t leave these items outside
Try to avoid leaving the following on the deck/porch:
- Any food (even sealed snacks)
- Coolers
- Trash bags
- Dirty dishes or pans
When in doubt: bring it inside.
Hot tub note (yes, it matters)
After you soak:
- Replace the cover securely (to retain heat and keep the tub clean)
- Fasten the latch (it helps keep curious wildlife from messing with the cover)
If you see a bear near the cabin
If you spot a bear (from a safe distance):
- Stay calm and go inside or give it plenty of room
- Do not approach for photos
- Keep children close and stay aware of your surroundings
- Give the bear space to move on
