There are places we visit, and then there are places that become part of our family story. Grey Haven has always been the second kind for me.
I grew up in East Tennessee, and even though life has taken me elsewhere, the Smokies still feel like home. Every time I turn onto the road that leads to the cabin and catch a glimpse of the expanse of mountains and sky, something in me settles. The air feels familiar. The pace slows. And I’m reminded why this place matters so much.
Some of my favorite memories live right on the deck. One spring morning, my mom and I were sitting outside with our coffee, talking quietly while the mountains woke up around us. A bear wandered up the stairs beside us — and we didn’t even notice until my husband opened the door and whispered, “Leave your coffee and come inside.” We still laugh about how calm we were.
Other memories are splashed across the cabin in quieter ways.
I painted with my sister on the deck one afternoon, the mountains stretching out in front of us like a backdrop you couldn’t dream up. Inside, the foosball table has seen more laughter than competition — some of our matches have been downright hilarious. There have been cozy dinners, slow drives through the Roaring Fork Motor Trail, and winter days spent snow tubing at Ober before coming back to warm up by the fire.
One of the things I love most about the cabin is how it gives everyone space to be together and space to unwind. With two living areas, part of your group can watch a movie while others play games or read by the fire. It’s the kind of layout that makes connection easy and relaxation natural.
The name Grey Haven comes from Tolkien’s Grey Havens — a peaceful harbor where travelers found rest before their next journey. That’s what this cabin has always been: a haven. A place to reconnect, to slow down, to make memories that stay with you long after you leave.
As a Premier Host on Vrbo, an Airbnb Superhost, and the proud owner of a Guest Favorite cabin, I’ve welcomed many families, couples, and friends over the years. One of my personal goals is to hike all 900 miles of trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. If you visit, I’d love for you to leave a note sharing your favorite hike or mountain view — reading guest notes is one of my favorite traditions and usually the first thing I do when I arrive.
Whether you’re here for adventure, rest, or a little of both, I hope Grey Haven becomes part of your story, too.
Warmly,
Kathryn
